The Lost City Trek

The Lost City Trek

Journey to Teyuna, the ancient heart of the Tayrona civilization.

Older than Machu Picchu, hidden deeper in the jungle

The Lost City, known to indigenous peoples as Teyuna (“Sacred Site”), is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in South America. Built around 800 AD—650 years before Machu Picchu—this ancient urban center once housed up to 8,000 Tayrona people across more than 500 stone terraces carved into the Sierra Nevada mountainside.

Abandoned during Spanish colonization and reclaimed by jungle for centuries, Teyuna was rediscovered in 1972. Today, reaching it requires a demanding multi-day trek through rivers, mountains, and indigenous territories—an adventure as rewarding as the destination itself.

A Living Sacred Site

The Lost City isn’t just an archaeological site—it’s sacred land to the indigenous Kogui, Wiwa, and Arhuaco peoples who are direct descendants of the Tayrona. They call the Sierra Nevada the “Heart of the World” and maintain spiritual sites throughout the region.

Your trek passes through their territories, offering rare opportunities for cultural exchange. Visitors are expected to show deep respect for the land and its people.

The Lost City trek is a UNESCO World Heritage experience that requires booking with authorized tourism agencies. All treks must be guided to ensure visitor safety, protect the archaeological site, and respect indigenous territories.
